Mario Caponnetto is an Italian naval architect and marine engineer. In his 30-year long career he worked for industry (shipyards and propeller manufactures), university (DINAV Genoa and EPFL Lausanne) and for competition (7 America’s Cup campaigns as designer and CFD leader). In his academic career he has been pioneering CFD for marine applications, namely performing the first ever viscous numerical simulations for downwind sails, planing boats and surface piercing propellers. He won twice the America’s Cup, in particular being responsible of the aerodynamic design of the BMW-Oracle giant wing in Valencia 2010 and developing the aerodynamic concepts of the Oracle Team USA catamaran for San Francisco 2013.
Now is part of the Concept Team at Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing.
He owns a CFD consultancies company with his long-time colleague Francis Hueber.
With his daughter Giulia he developed an original concept of kite hydrofoil, called Twinfoil, that combines the simplicity of the twintip kite boards with the performances benefits of foiling.
