All crew are safe and the ORACLE TEAM USA AC45S test platform is secure back at base following a capsize during training in Bermuda on Wednesday afternoon.
“It was a great day for training, sunny, 15-20 knots of wind,” said skipper Jimmy Spithill. “So it was a great afternoon of sailing until we capsized.
“The boat didn’t tip over through a nose-dive, which is what normally happens, but we were just pressed over sideways.”
The boat was righted quickly with the assistance of the team chase boats and was then able to sail back to base.
“It was a good test of our on-water safety procedures. Everybody is safe, it looks like we had minimal damage, but we’ll know more on that after the shore crew get a look,” Spithill said.
ORACLE TEAM USA is the second team to capsize during training in the past few months. Land Rover BAR capsized on the Solent in the UK just before Christmas.
“Hopefully we don’t see too many more of these, but this is where we are as a sport where you’re always pushing to be on the limit. We’ll learn from this and move forward.”

2015 was a critical year for ORACLE TEAM USA and its campaign to win the America’s Cup in 2017. The team moved to a new base in Bermuda, competed in three Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series events and has launched and sailed two AC45S test boats, with a third nearly ready to go in the new year. It was a busy year, and 2016 looks to be just as exciting. “We’re trying to always the raise the bar and get faster and faster,” says helmsman and sailing team manager Tom Slingsby.

The wingsail on ORACLE TEAM USA’s racing yachts and the wings on airplanes operate in similar fashion. As Ian “Fresh” Burns explains, a significant amount of force is generated to propel the boat faster or lift a plane off the ground. And, the team is utilizing the aerodynamic know-how of Airbus to help achieve optimum performance on the water.

ORACLE TEAM USA became the first America’s Cup team to sail an AC45S boat on the Great Sound in Bermuda.
On Monday, the defending champion of the America’s Cup launched its training boat for the first time and put in over two hours of testing on the future race course of the America’s Cup.
“It’s a real statement to be the first ones out there on the 45-footer and to get a feel for the race course on a boat of this size,” Spithill said. “It can only help to give us an advantage as we come into the race period.”
The Oracle Team USA comeback from 1-8 down in the America’s Cup depended on learning to tack the boat faster. Highlights of the AC72s on the upwind legs in San Francisco.
